The San Diego Chargers franchise has its roots in the upstart American Football League that was formed in 1960 to compete against the NFL. As charter members of the AFL, the Chargers were actually founded as the Los Angeles Chargers. During the franchise’s first season in the AFL all of its home games were played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. After just one season in Los Angeles, the Bolts moved 90 minutes down the freeway from LA to San Diego.

During the first seven seasons in San Diego, the franchise played all of its home games at Balboa Stadium. Since 1967, San Diego Chargers tickets have been sold for home games at Qualcomm Stadium. Built in 1967 as a multipurpose venue in San Diego, Qualcomm Stadium is the oldest venue used by an NFL team. Qualcomm Stadium is one of three venues in the United States to have hosted the World Series, MLB All-Star Game, and the Super Bowl. Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome (now demolished) and the team’s former home in Los Angeles are the other two.

When the San Diego Chargers played in the AFL, the franchise was a dominant force each year. Over the 10-year existence of the league, the Chargers won an AFL title (1963), appeared in the AFL playoffs five times, and reached the AFL Championship game four times. When the franchise joined the NFL following the merger in 1970 it struggled to maintain its level of dominance. The 1970s and 1980s were marked by a dip in talent on the field and results. Between 1970 and 2000, the team made just six appearances in the playoffs, with one conference title and one Super Bowl appearance.

Today, San Diego Chargers tickets are a hot item in Southern California as the franchise contends for a playoff position on an annual basis. Since 2004, the Chargers have reached the NFL playoffs six times, winning four consecutive AFC West division titles between 2006 and 2009. As a member of the AFC West, the San Diego Chargers face the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, and Kansas City Chiefs annually.

The AFC West has gone through peaks and valleys in terms of competitiveness on the field, but the fans who purchase San Diego Chargers tickets each week can attest to the strength of the rivalry between the four franchises. All four franchises in the AFC West were charter members of the AFL and have been facing off on the field since 1960.
