The Baltimore Ravens began play in the NFL as the original Cleveland Browns franchise. The decision to relocate the franchise from Cleveland to Baltimore was just as controversial as the move of the former Baltimore Colts to Indianapolis several years prior. Art Modell, the long-time owner of the Browns, was fed up with trying to get a new stadium in Cleveland. In retaliation, he moved the team in the middle of the night from Cleveland to Baltimore.

Baltimore Ravens tickets went on sale for the first time at the start of the 1996 NFL season. Although the franchise was firmly settled in Baltimore, the wrangling over the franchise’s status was far from over. Modell would spend months in court with officials in Cleveland over the status of his team. Eventually, Modell was forced to leave all intellectual property pertaining to the Cleveland Browns (name, logo, and team history) in Cleveland for a future expansion team to assume. In return, the NFL recognized his Baltimore Ravens as an official expansion franchise instead.

It didn’t take long for the Ravens to establish themselves as a force in the AFC, and in Baltimore. Fans flocked to see the team play, purchasing Baltimore Ravens tickets in droves. In just the fifth season in Baltimore, the team reached Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa Bay, where it dominated the New York Giants on the way to victory. That team was led by stars like Ray Lewis on defense and a solid offensive line, anchored by Jonathon Ogden.

The Ravens have continued to experience success as members of the AFC North division. Since winning the Super Bowl at the end of the 2000 season, the Ravens have won the AFC North title four times and made eight more playoff appearances. Following the 2012 season, the Ravens won a second Super Bowl title. While that team was led again by defensive stars, Ray Lewis among them, it was Joe Flacco and the offense that made the difference this time.

Today, the Ravens compete fiercely in the AFC North division against franchises with tough defenses. The Pittsburgh Steelers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns round out the AFC North roster. Each and every game between these franchises is a gritty rivalry game. Pittsburgh and Baltimore are particularly aggressive with one another, vying for top defense in the league on a yearly basis. Of course, the Ravens are greeted with disdain every time the team plays in Cleveland against the Browns.
