One of America's Oldest Teams: The Cincinnati Reds were established as an independent team in 1881 after being kicked out of the National League, but the team's origin can be traced as far back as 1869. The Reds have earned the status of being the oldest Major League team to have played in one city every year since its inception, as they have never been relocated nor sat out a single season. In 1882, after the formation of a league to rival the National League was necessitated, the Reds (then known as the Red Stockings) won the very first pennant of the newly formed American Association. In 1889, the team shortened its name to the Reds and accepted an invitation to rejoin the National League. The Reds finished as high as third place in the National League during the 1890s, but were not remarkable performers during the first decade of the 1900s. New Playing Fields: Having Cincinnati Reds tickets in your hands at the turn of the century was a treat. The Reds gained their new modern ballpark in 1912 and started to make their way to the top of the league, winning the pennant in 1919 and earning a victory over the Chicago White Sox at the world championship. However, the 1920s and the Great Depression proved to be even more of a struggle for the team and they were bankrupt by 1931. They were bought by the Crosley brothers in 1933 and their home field was renamed. By the late 1930s, they were again fourth in the division and even became the champions of the league, but lost the 1939 World Series to the New York Yankees. They finally grasped a World Series title against the Detroit Tigers in 1940, but the following two decades were unremarkable for the Reds though they did earn the 1961 pennant. The 1960s were a series of disappointments, and though the Reds were threatened with relocation, Cincinnati built a new modern stadium for them downtown. They played their last game at Crosley Field in June of 1970.

The Big Red Machine: Once manager George “Sparky” Anderson took over in 1970, the Reds became pennant contenders for a straight decade, posting a losing record in only one year (1971). Their lineup of amazingly skilled starters, pitchers, and offense earned them the moniker “The Big Red Machine”. After clinching several National League pennants, they went on to win the World Series against the Boston Red Sox in 1975, and again versus the Yankees in 1976. The Reds placed second in 1977 and 1978, leading to the firing of Anderson as manager. They won their division in 1979 but didn't make it to the World Series, and by 1981 they were second in the league. However, they made a comeback and won the World Series in 1990 against the Oakland Athletics. During the 1990s, the Reds maintained a lead in their division and had severl winning seasons, but their success was stopped short after a change in management in 2000, leaving them without a winning season until 2010. The Cincinnati Reds saw their stadium once again demolished and another one erected in its place with the building of Great American Ballpark in 2002. Despite increased attendance, the Reds failed to impress until 2010 when they won the National League Central Division title. From 2007-2013, the Reds made it to the playoffs three times.
