The Beginning of the Rockies: The Colorado Rockies Major League Baseball team was founded as an expansion team out of Denver in 1991, a part of the National League's western division. They have been contenders for the pennant a handful of times since they began playing in 1993. They made it to the World Series in 2007 but lost to the Boston Red Sox. Two Rockies players have been named MVP – Larry Walker in 1997 and Matt Holliday in 2007. Several Rockies teammates have won the Silver Slugger Award, including Dante Bichette, Eric Young, Mike Hampton, and Michael Cuddyer. Todd Helton won the Hank Aaron Award in 2000. Six Rockies have won the Gold Glove Award, including Larry Walker, Todd Helton, and Troy Tulowitzki. Get your Colorado Rockies tickets today to see more of their all-star players in action.

A Star Player Emerges: Right fielder Larry Walker played for the Colorado Rockies for nine years, from their inception in 1995 until a year before he retired, in 2004. He didn't grow up dreaming about playing baseball, however. Walker aspired to be a professional hockey player and at the age of 16, he pursued placement on two Junior A teams in Canada, but decided to focus on baseball after being cut from those teams. In 1984, he was selected for the Canadian team at the World Youth Championships, where he impressed the scouting director of a Major League Baseball team, the Montreal Expos. The director signed Walker despite his lack of experience. He didn't do amazingly well in his first season playing professional baseball, but he was soon sent to play with the Florida Instructional League, where he developed the skills needed to play pro baseball. Walker became one of their best young players and in 1989, debuted wth the Montreal Expos. Walker became a role model for other young ball players as he maintained nearly a .300 batting average his first several seasons with the Expos. Walker signed with the Rockies for the 1995 season and helped lead the Rockies to the playoffs. He's won 7 Gold Glove Awards and 3 Silver Slugger Awards. He is the only player to have won the Tip O'Neill Award more than 3 times in their career – he's won it nine times – and he is the first Canadian baseball player to win the MVP Award. Getting your own Colorado Rockies tickets and seeing a game live gives you a chance to watch numerous players who were inspired by Larry Walker's leadership and skill.

The Stillwater Stinger: “The Stillwater Stinger” is the nickname given to former Rockies left fielder Matt Holliday upon starting with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2010, and he most definitely earned it. Holliday was selected by the Rockies right out of high school in 1998 and made his Major League debut with the Denver team in 2004. He finished the season with a batting average of .290 and was a contender for National League Rookie of the Year. In 2005, he improved his batting average to .307 and proved his prowess as an offensive player. His batting average improved even more the following year with a .326, placing him in the top five in the league and earning him his first Silver Slugger Award. He was the leader in the National League for batting average in 2007 (.340) as well as RBIs (137), making him the fifth player to do so in nearly 60 years. He broke records set by previous Rockies players and became a legitimate defensive player with the second highest fielding percentage out of the entire Major League. His skill helped lead the Rockies to the playoffs and the World Series in 2007. In 2008, he was traded to the Oakland Athletics, thus ending his stellar performance as a Rockies left fielder. You could have Colorado Rockies tickets in your hand and still never see a game where a player breaks the records Holliday set while he was with the Rockies.
