When the American Football League opened its doors in 1960, Lamar Hunt was there to act as a guiding force. Hunt wanted to establish a professional football organization in his hometown of Dallas. Hunt was denied in his attempts to purchase and relocate the Chicago Cardinals of the NFL, so he decided to take his actions one step further and establish an entire league to compete against the NFL for fans and revenue. Hunt founded the American Football League in 1959, and established his own franchise, the Dallas Texans, for the league’s inaugural season in 1960.

During the decade the AFL existed as a competitor to the NFL, Lamar Hunt’s Texans franchise thrived as a powerhouse. After playing three seasons in Dallas, Hunt relocated the franchise to Kansas City. Hunt had been looking to move the franchise to either Atlanta, Georgia or Miami, Florida, but when the Mayor of Kansas City (Harold Roe Bartle) promised to expand seating at Municipal Stadium and triple the sale of Kansas City Chiefs tickets, Hunt decided to relocate to Missouri.

The franchise departed Dallas following a victory in the 1962 AFL Championship, and it wouldn’t take long for that success to continue in Kansas City. Under the guidance of coach Hank Stram, and bolstered by the rabid fans that purchased Kansas City Chiefs tickets each season, the franchise went on to win two more AFL Championships in 1966 and 1969. The latter of those two victories led to the team’s first and only Super Bowl title in 1969. Following its win in the 1969 AFL Championship game, the Chiefs defeated the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.

The Kansas City Chiefs became the second AFL team to defeat an NFL franchise in the Super Bowl, were the second team (Green Bay Packers) to appear in more than one Super Bowl, and also became the first team to appear in the Super Bowl in two different decades as the game was played in January 1970.

Today, Kansas City Chiefs tickets are sold for home games at Arrowhead Stadium. The stadium has served as the home of the franchise since the 1972 NFL season and remains one of the oldest stadiums used by an NFL franchise. The Chiefs currently compete as members of the AFC West division. Rivalries and regional tensions run high in the division that also features the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, and San Diego Chargers.
