The Saints were founded in 1967 by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans. The franchise began play at Tulane Stadium on the campus of the University of Tulane in the western section of the city of New Orleans. Since 1975, the team has called the Louisiana Superdome home, though it now carries a sponsorship deal that has seen it renamed the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

Although the Saints were far from competitive during the early years, taking 20 seasons to achieve its first winning season, the franchise has become well-known for its raucous fanbase and lively supporters. Every week, fans purchase enough New Orleans Saints tickets to sell out the Superdome and rev up the decibel levels in support of their team. The Saints have taken advantage of their fan support to create one of the most difficult environments for road teams to succeed in within the NFL.

Recent history has been very kind to the Saints when it comes to playoff success. The franchise did not win its first playoff game until 2000, but since 2006 the franchise has made five playoff appearances and overcome a number of daunting, historical hurdles in the process. In 2009, the franchise won its most games ever in a single season with a record of 13-3. The team, led by quarterback Drew Brees and head coach Sean Payton, defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship game before defeating the Indianapolis Colts in the Super bowl.

As of 2014, the New Orleans Saints are one of only three teams (New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers) to make just one appearance in the Super Bowl and win that game. For long periods of the NFL’s history, the New Orleans Saints franchise was the lone representative of football across large portions of the Deep South. The Saints draw a fanbase that stretches from eastern Texas (before the Houston Texans) up through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, and into parts of Alabama and the Florida Panhandle.

Today, the Saints compete in the NFC South division against the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Fans purchasing New Orleans Saints tickets each season are treated to home games against Matt Ryan’s Falcons, Cam Newton’s Panthers, and the stingy defenses of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the upcoming season, the Saints will be looking to retake the NFC South crown from the Carolina Panthers and return to the playoffs for the fourth time since the 2010 season.
