As charter members of the American Football League in 1960, the Oakland Raiders played in the AFL each season during its decade of existence. Al Davis, a minority owner initially, helped improve the team’s fortunes on the field in those early days. For the first three seasons, the team achieved no notable success on the field. When Davis took over as coach in 1963, the team began an upward trajectory that would culminate in an AFL Championship in 1967. Unfortunately, the Raiders would lose the Super Bowl that year to the Green Bay Packers.

The seeds of success had been planted though, and through the closing days of the AFL and the early years following the AFL-NFL merger, the Oakland Raiders would become a force to be reckoned with on the field. The Raiders won Super Bowl XI following the 1976 season, defeating the Minnesota Vikings for the franchise’s first NFL title. Just four seasons later the Raiders shocked the NFL by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV.

In 1982, amid slumping sales of Oakland Raiders tickets and displeasure with the stadium situation in Oakland, the franchise relocated to Los Angeles, California. The success that the franchise had enjoyed on the field in Oakland followed it to Los Angeles in the early days following the move. During the team’s second season in LA, a third Super Bowl trophy was captured when the Raiders beat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XVIII. However, this was the beginning of the end for Raiders’ football in LA.

After 1985, the Raiders managed only one division title and two playoff appearances in nine seasons. With ticket sales again slumping and no permanent stadium solution available in LA, the franchise returned to Oakland in 1995. At the turn of the 21st century, the Raiders experienced a resurgence that was capped by an appearance in Super Bowl XXXVII. Although the team lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sales of Oakland Raider tickets were strong and the fanbase had embraced their prodigal franchise as its own again.

Today, the Raiders compete in the AFC West division of the NFL. The rivalries in the AFC West are unlike those in any other conference in football. The rivalries are split into two categories: historic and geographical. All four teams, the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, and Kansas City Chiefs, have a historical rivalry that dates back to the founding of the AFL. Geographically speaking, the Raiders and Chargers compete for fans in California, while the Broncos and Chiefs compete for fans in America’s Heartland.
